ESPN pundit and former Chelsea star Craig Burley says Chelsea must not sign out of favour Atletico Madrid forward Thomas Lemar during the January transfer window. The French winger, who was destined for greatness once upon a time, has only been a shadow of his past after joining the Spanish club.
Chelsea’s transfer ban was lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS], and all of us expected the blues to get reinforcements left, right and centre. Results have been disappointing as of yet as contrary to expectations, Chelsea haven’t been able to sign a single player during this transfer season.
Since the January transfer window opened, Chelsea have been linked with almost every attacking layer in Europe for Frank Lampard had previously stated that he wanted to find an attacker with the ability to create goals, in order to replace Eden Hazard. He has also stated that the current Chelsea side would be inadequate if we wanted to finish in the top 4 this season. Despite that, The Blues are yet to dive into the January transfer market.
Jadon Sancho was a name most promisingly linked, and former Blues star Craig Burley hinted they would be better off looking at the Borussia Dortmund player rather than Lemar.
Speaking on ESPN FC, the player-turned-pundit urged Chelsea to snub a move for the 24-year-old.
A player who came on the scene and had a big reputation from his time in France, he went to Atletico Madrid for huge money, and it’s been a big struggle.”
“He’s another talent who seems to be floundering.
“I don’t know if Chelsea would be willing to take the chance on him.
“They’ve got Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic who is out injured, they’ve been linked with Jadon Sancho.
“I just don’t know if Lampard is [ready to sign him].
“If he’d been playing regularly [they might sign him], but I just can’t see Lampard taking the chance.
Earlier this week, Atletico boss Diego Simeone confirmed the Frenchman hadn’t lived up to expectations since joining from Monaco in 2018 for £60million.
