Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton believes Chelsea should immediately get rid of their goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga immediately because he “just isn’t good enough”.
Sutton says Chelsea should have already sold the Spaniard last summer after he refused to be substituted in the Carabao Cup final under previous boss Maurizio Sarri.
Kepa still remains the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, however, Sutton says Chelsea should forget about the financial losses and move the 25-year-old on in the summer.
Frank owes him nothing, Chelsea should have got rid of him after his Carabao Cup exploits, when he refused to come off,” Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“They should have got rid of him then. You can’t do that. It doesn’t matter [if Chelsea can’t recoup the £72m], Chelsea have got enough money.
“He shouldn’t have been part of the club at that stage and then his performances haven’t been very good at all from what I’ve seen.
“So Frank has to be ruthless, he has to think about himself, he has to think about finishing in the top four.
“Things don’t seem right in Chelsea at this moment in time.
“Frank seems to be niggled and angry, clearly he wanted players in the window. Chopping Kepa is the least of his worries.
“Yes [Caballero is better than Kepa]. The fact of the matter is if you’re a defender who do you want behind you? Kepa or Caballero?
“Who do you think is going to make the most saves?
“Do you know what, it doesn’t matter how much they’ve spent, whether they’ve spent £72m or £700,000 – if he’s not good enough, he’s not good enough.
“Frank will be judging him through training all week, he’ll be getting advice from the goalkeeper coach.
“I think dropping him has come quite late really, he should have been dropped earlier on in the season.”
Frank Lampard had explained in his press conference later that he dropped Kepa because he wanted more competition for the goalkeeper squad.
