Due to the recent reversal in the rules that govern the cut-off date for yellow cards received by players and staff to after the completion of the round of 16, another yellow card for Mateo Kovacic and Hakim Ziyech would mean that they will be forced to sit out of the Champions League second-leg clash against Porto.
The UEFA Executive Committee have now decided that all the yellow cards accumulated by the players and the staff would be carried forward to the quarter-finals again.
It is to be noted that Mateo Kovacic and Hakim Ziyech are one yellow card away from facing suspension for the game against Porto next week.
Fortunately for Chelsea duo, all yellow cards would expire on the completion of the quarter-finals, and both the players would certainly be available for the semifinals, provided Chelsea progress to the next round, and they don’t a yellow or a red card this evening.
To the delight of the Chelsea fans though, Mason Mount and Jorginho are going to be safe despite them having accumulated three yellow cards in the competition as they have already served their suspension in the second-leg win over Atletico Madrid .
This will also be the case for several other Chelsea players who are on one yellow card; Cesar Azpilicueta, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, N’Golo Kante, and Christian Pulisic.
